Intellectual Virtue and Introductory Biology Consultation

Monday June 27, 2017

Location
Stayer Center for Executive Education, University of Notre Dame

Purpose
Facilitate dialog between Biological Sciences faculty about the incorporation of intellectual virtue into the proposed Introductory Biology (url) sequence during an all-day retreat.

Outcomes
First, deeper awareness of the role of intellectual virtue in science and science education. Second, practical recommendations about how intellectual virtue could be developed within the Introductory Biology sequence and other Biological Sciences courses. Third, guidelines for future development of Big Questions and Foundations courses that will form the future basis for the Introductory Biology sequence.

Plan
Faculty will be given the opportunity, first, to participate in facilitated, structured discussion of intellectual virtue in the context of Introductory Biology. Second, faculty will discuss how intellectual virtue might be incorporated into the Big Questions and Foundations courses that in the future would constitute the Introductory Biology sequence.
